I love to watch them and listen to their melodic calls.\u00a0 I thought folks might be interested to know about the four basic adult loon calls: wail, tremolo, yodel and hoot.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><!--more-->The <strong>wail<\/strong> resembles a wolf howl. Individuals use this call to locate their mates and chicks.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The<strong> tremolo<\/strong> sounds like a quavering laugh. It is typically used when loons are disturbed. It is the only call loons give while flying.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The <strong>yodel <\/strong>is a sustained call made up of several repetitions of a three-syllable squeal. It is an aggressive call usually given in\u00a0territorial confrontations by\u00a0male loons. Each male has an individual identifiable yodel. Only male loons yodel.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The <strong>hoot<\/strong> is a\u00a0soft, one-note call loons use in close quarters.
